Now I can see the little details put in with care The fainter runes on the compass were not entirely visible until now, the fine details really bring it out. I really like the way you shaped the metal where it "crosses over" The near broken infinity sign really does a good job keeping your eyes focused. I didn't even notice till now the blood on the cover *facepalm* The bottom right, while really hard to see, looks fantastic and realistic.
I'm curious though, how does the yellow light from the compass reflect around it on the leather but the red doesn't? Or is it the light source focusing down on it that's yellow, given the piece is shown embedded and not raised?
I suppose that the yellowing that you're seeing could be described as discoloration or as being a result of an outside light source...in this case I believe that I made the conscious choice to make the area around the symbol maybe slightly more yellow because it would draw your eyes out of the dark warmer shadows, and toward the symbol itself. The yellow isn't necessarily coming from the yellow within the symbol, but as a painting, both it and the leather share a palette. In having the two materials share a color palette, it helps to bring the painting together as a whole, and while not totally real in appearance I think it does its job....
...also, perhaps the center isn't truly yellow either....maybe it's just revealing what is behind it....
In the end, if you really want to see the details of the piece and ruminate on their meaning, I recommend either buying the book, or at least checking it out at a bookstore...
Ahhhh ok. I had a similar line of thought of why, very good to know regardless.
I do plan on checking out The Order after I finish my Starcraft series, Diablo archives, Night of the Dragon, War of the Ancients, and Shattering. I finished the Book of Cain! Haha. I'm still missing some others. Definitely have my writer preferences on them. Definitely curious on Nate Kenyon's style
Also love the leathery texture. :>
